Space Tour: Deep Red

Chicago, Illinois - Lighting Design by Kelly Flaugher

Deep Red Wine Merchant gets its name from owner Dave Thompson's favorite horror film - but this intimate wine shop and bar is anything but scary. Interior by Chicago's own 34-TEN. Photography by James John Jetel.

Light-filled and charming, Deep Red Wine Merchant is a wonderful addition to Chicago's vibrant Avondale neighborhood. Owner Dave Thompson wants to make wine more accessible to everyone, hosting wine workshops and events that encourage guests to explore this world without feeling intimidated.

Named after his favorite Italian giallo film, Deep Red's logo is also a reference to this cinema classic. He refers to the interior design as "elegant horror", with "The Shining" providing inspiration for the main room and a bathroom reminiscent of the red bathroom in "Twin Peaks".

A bold line of iconic Flowerpot VP2 Pendants from venerable Danish design house &Tradition hangs above the bar, enhancing the vintage feel of the space. Created by Danish design legend Verner Panton in 1968, these simple, yet elegant lamps represented a major break with convention at the time. Modern and minimalistic, the black Ramen Wall Sconces above the shelves of wine punctuate each arch with mod effect. The bold black statement lighting artfully accentuates the cream and crimson colors throughout the room, striking the perfect balance.
