Glamtiques: 5321 Lamp

Paavo Tynell, 1938

Imagined by the founder and chief designer of Finland's first industrial lighting manufacturer, the 5321 lamp by Paavo Tynell is a charmingly romantic take on midcentury modernism.

Paavo Tynell is considered a trailblazer in Finnish lighting design. He was one of the founders of Taito Oy, Finland's first industrial producer of lighting fixtures. With Taito Oy, Tynell helped revolutionize how people thought about and produced modern lighting in Europe and abroad. He collaborated with prominent Finnish architects like Alvar Aalto in the 1930s and 1940s, producing fixtures for Aalto's most celebrated projects - including the Paimio Sanatorium and the Viipuri Library.

Paavo Tynell's best-known lighting designs incorporate shapes found in nature. One of his most beloved works is the graceful 5321 Table Lamp, which he created in 1938.

The 5321 lamp is also called the "Shell lamp" for its unique shell-shaped brass shade. This just covers the bulb, which appears like a shiny pearl underneath. Wrapped in rattan, the stem adds to the lamp's organic feel. The entire effect is playful and romantic, a wonderful example of Paavo Tynell's inspired contributions to midcentury lighting design.

In 2018, Danish design brand Gubi released the 5321 lamp along with other pieces in their Paavo Tynell collection. Timelessly elegant and truly imaginative, this lamp brings a delicate, refined moment to spaces of all styles. It is decorative, yet functional - with a look that is equal parts understated and delightful.
