Space Tour: Suburban Oasis

Granada Hills, CA

A nondescript suburban house was the ideal blank slate for designers Carlos Naude and Whitney Brown to create a beautiful home for their growing family.

The talented couple are the minds behind Working Holiday, a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary creative studio that has completed a number of successful renovation projects throughout Southern California. When it came to finding a home for themselves, this spacious 1960s dwelling had some of the things they were looking for - like a pool and a large kitchen. The couple decided to replace all of the dated finishes, creating an aesthetic inspired by Carlos' heritage and their time spent in Stockholm. The fully reinvented space incorporates Spanish architectural influences, handmade Mexican finishes and furnishings, and Scandinavian minimalism.

The couple transformed most of the interior doorways to create arches in place of corners. Handmade brick sourced from Tijuana graces the entryway, kitchen and stairs. Warm hardwood floors replace the existing tile, carpeting and faux wood flooring in the other rooms of the home. A distinctive wrought iron railing elevates the staircase, with minimalist Glaze Wall Sconces by Arteriors Home shining on the walls above.

Spectacular in its simplicity, the Strand Onion Pendant provides gentle, diffused lighting in the dining room. Sculptural, yet subtle, the Fishbone Floor Lamp pairs effortlessly with the modern furnishings in the beautifully curated living room. The Maia Floor Lamp with its perfectly imperfect ceramic base brings natural texture and elegance to the cozy family room. Eclectic and personal, this remarkable home transformation is a veritable triumph of vision and intention.
